Our Craft

Every Natural Nomad fabric begins with centuries-old techniques, natural dyes and the skilled hands of master artisans.

The Art of Bagru Printing

Every block printed fabric in our collections is created in the village of Bagru, Rajasthan, where families have practised this remarkable craft for generations.

Each design begins with hand-carved wooden blocks. One colour is printed at a time, with every block carefully aligned by eye. Thousands of individual impressions may be needed to complete a single length of fabric.

Unlike machine printing, no two metres are ever exactly alike. Tiny variations are part of the beauty, reflecting the hand of the artisan who created them.

Colours from Nature

Our fabrics are printed using traditional natural dyes derived from plants and minerals that have coloured Indian textiles for centuries.

The workshop prepares colours using ingredients including:

  • Indigo for deep blues
  • Madder root for warm reds
  • Pomegranate peel for soft yellows
  • Iron for rich charcoal blacks
  • Harda (myrobalan) to prepare the cotton before printing

These natural processes create colours with warmth and depth that develop beautifully over time.

Printing One Layer at a Time

Each colour requires its own carved wooden block.

The printer carefully places the block onto the cloth, striking it with practiced rhythm before moving to the next impression.

Layer by layer, pattern by pattern, the fabric slowly comes to life.

There are no shortcuts—only patience, precision and years of experience.

From Bagru to Pushkar

Once the fabrics are complete, they travel to Govinda’s tailoring workshop in Pushkar.

Here every garment is individually cut, sewn and finished by hand.

Rather than designing around mass production, we choose fabrics first, allowing each collection to celebrate the beauty of traditional craftsmanship.
